Our Collective Small Giving Could Literally Change a Life!

Spending in the way of Allah (SWT) to help those who are less fortunate is a form of worship that Allah loves. Charity protects us from the hellfire, shades us on the Day of Judgement, increases Allah's favors upon us, elevates our status, and so much more! Let us use our blessings from Allah to help lift up those in need whether it's by donating our time or money.

January Food Drive, A Great Success

As temperatures hovered around the mid thirties, six volunteers trickled in as the clock counted the eleventh hour of the day. A father and his teenage son pull into the parking lot of Islamic Leadership Institute of America with over 400 lbs of cooking oil, peanut butter, strawberry reserve, cereal, milk, pasta, spaghetti sauce and rice.

As they popped up their trunk another father and his teenage daughter pulled into the lot to get the area quickly set up into a food distribution center.

A project started exactly a year ago when Ansar Al-Birr, the social services arm of Dar us Salaam, came down from College Park to collaborate and train a group of youth from Baltimore and Howard County on how to run food drives and distributions. A year later as 2023 starts, more than 10,000 lbs of food including fresh meat and milk has been given out to close to 780 families.

Patrons come from as far as East Baltimore, Towson, Columbia and Ellicott City, some are low income families, other are recent refugees who settles in Baltimore and working hard to find how to start a new life in a country they are unfamiliar with its culture, workforce, climate and norms, while others are senior citizens who have served society and are living next door at the senior center.

Shortly thereafter, a young college student walks up to pull up his sleeves and starts unpacking packages of food. A student at a Baltimore University and a member of a grantmaking board of directors at a nonprofit in Baltimore, that provides support to youth development organizations; he has already exhibited leadership and servitude to his community and city.

As described in the Noble Quran, "and feed the poor who is content and the one who is forced to ask" (22:36), all the beneficiaries we meet are content, and are members of our global community that we would never have guessed need groceries.

As the clock hit noon, a third car pulled into the lot with two huge boxes of goat meat, fresh produce and canned beans. A total of six volunteers, two teenagers, a young college adult and three adult mentors were putting into practice, the verse of the Noble Quran, "and they feed the needy, the orphan and the captive, regardless of how much they need themselves" (76:8).

Some months see as many as 12 teenagers planning, organizing, unpacking and packing food staples into reusable environmentally friendly green bags for their fellow residents. What started as a high school leadership development internship project in January 2022, has turned into a monthly community get-together bringing strangers for one cause, helping others. Many of the beneficiaries themselves roll up their sleeves and help with stacking, packing and loading cars, especially in months where the load is high. In December the food drive was over in less than 15 mins, as hundreds of cars lined up around the block.
